About the Instructor

Dr VDr. Charles Venglarik

Biology Instructor
Jefferson Campus

Ruby Carson  242E

Dr. Venglarik attended Gannon University in Erie, Pennsylvania and the University of Detroit, where he earned both B.S. (1981) and M.S. (1982) degrees in Biology.  Thereafter he attended graduate school in the Department of Physiology at the University of Michigan where he received his doctoral degree in 1988.  His thesis project showed that a neurotransmitter (acetylcholine) regulated the transport of both sodium and chloride ions across the reptilian large intestine, which is a model "tight epithelium".  These studies were supported in part by a NIH  training grant in the Pharmacological Sciences. The emphasis on research at Michigan was balanced by teaching experiences under the supervision of Drs. Arthur Vander and Jim ShermanSeveral of Dr. Venglarik's peers in graduate school (Drs. Bill Germann and David Shier) are distinguished educators and authors.

During most of the past 16 years Dr. Venglarik worked as a biomedical research scientist at the University of Alabama at Birmingham where he investigated the mechanisms that regulate or mediate ion transport across airway or kidney epithelial cells. The general aim of these studies was to better understand the molecular defects causing Cystic Fibrosis or Polycystic Kidney Disease The results are described  in >24 peer reviewed articles (PubMed).

Dr. Venglarik also has experience teaching physiology and/or anatomy to a broad spectrum of students including: medical, dental, optometry, graduate and undergraduates.  He enjoys teaching and was recently hired as a full-time Biology Instructor at Jefferson State Community College.  For a complete discription of Dr. Venglarik's professional experience refer to his:

   curriculum vitae.
