CIS 130 General Information Concerning Lab Assignments

and the Campus Computer Labs

Read this first!

Computer Labs:

The open lab is RC 120 (RSH Library at Shelby Campus). The instructional labs used for lab classes are RC 110, 115, and 122 (RSH 200 and 204 at Shelby Campus). Before using an instructional lab, check the lab hours posted outside the door to make sure a class is not meeting in the lab.

Lab Hours:

Open lab hours: Monday-Thursday 8 a.m.-9 p.m., Friday 8 a.m.-4 p.m., and Saturday hours vary each term. Instructional labs are usually open between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. Labs will be closed on all holidays for which the college is closed. Labs close for the semester on the last day of regular classes for the semester.

General information for textbook tutorials:

Read and follow all directions carefully!

·        For assignment 1 and several other assignments, you will be following steps that are given in a textbook.  The instructions in the Assignment What to do: sections give you the page numbers from the book to do, along with corrections/additions.

·        Read through the assigned pages of the text before going to the lab and mark correction/additions in your book.

·        Gray boxes surround the operations you will perform in the tutorial so that they will stand out, but since they are scattered about, it is easy to accidentally miss some steps, so pay close attention.

·        To receive full credit for an assignment, you must turn in all items listed in the “What you need to turn in on the due date” section.

Getting started in the lab --- Booting up the computer:

1.      Choose a computer in RC 120, RC 115, RC 110, or RC 122. You may also use computers on the other campus in RSH 200, RSH 204, or the RSH library. Classes are taught in all computer labs, except RC 120. Please make sure a class is not in session in the lab before entering.

2.      Move the mouse to see if the computer is already on. If it is not on, turn on the computer system unit and monitor. When a computer is turned on, it goes through a power-on-self-test that may take a few minutes.

3.      At the network logon screen, you will need to enter the User Name Student, Password jeff, & Log on to CIS. The password must be entered in lowercase letters.

4.      After the Windows desktop comes up, wait to see if you need to enter your student ID (Social Security number). All systems should begin requiring student IDs after the first couple weeks of class.

When you are finished - Restarting the computer:

Unless you are the last student of the day, when you are finished with the computer, please restart the system for the next student. Restarting the system clears your student number.

1.   Click on Start in the bottom left corner to activate the Start Menu.

2.   Click on the Turn Off Computer option.

3.   Select Restart. If the lab is closing, please choose the Turn Off option instead of Restart.
