CIS 130 Lab Assignment 2 – Windows XP and Files

You will need your Microsoft Office 2003 Brief textbook,
a computer with Windows XP software and at least one blank diskette.

IMPORTANT: Before doing the tutorial, you will need to use the computers in the lab to copy some files to one or two diskettes or you will need to download the data files from the Web using the instructions on the inside back cover of the Office text.

Assignment 2 - Windows XP and Files --- What to do:

1.      Before going to the lab, read pages WIN 3-36 in your Office book and make sure that you understand all of the key terms on page 36. If you feel that you need to, you may perform the steps that appear on these pages in the yellow boxes, but as long as you would feel comfortable performing the tasks described, you are not required to do them.

2.      In the lab, if you have not already booted up the computer, see Getting started in the lab directions from the General Lab Information handout.

3.      Put a blank formatted 3 ½” high density disk that you label as WinXP Data Disk into the drive. Be sure to put your name and class time on the disk label, as well.

4.      Double-click the CIS 130 or Shortcut to CIS 130 folder icon on the computer screen to open it.

5.      Double-click the Office 2003 Data folder icon to open it.

6.      Right-click the FileManager folder, then choose Send to and then click 3 1/2 inch floppy. The FileManager folder and its contents should be copied to your diskette. See page FM3 of your Office text for a file list. Note: They refer to the FileManager folder as FM.

7.      Repeat steps 3-6 with another diskette if you wish to make a second copy of the files to use in case you need to start over for any reason.

8.      Open your Office textbook to page FM 3. Read the Managing Your Files chapter and perform the instructions that appear in the yellow boxes on pages FM 3- FM 21 with the following additions/corrections. You should mark the additions/corrections in your book before you begin performing the steps so that will not miss any of them.

a.       Addition: On page FM9, after opening Windows Explorer in step 1, click View on the menu, choose Toolbars, and make sure that check marks appear by Standard Buttons and Address Bar. If one of them is not checked, click it to check it and then view the toolbars list again to make sure that both are checked.

b.      Correction: On pages FM10 and FM11 and throughout the chapter, they refer to the folder on your disk as FM, when its name will actually be FileManager.

c.      Addition: On page FM 13, after you have completed step 5, make sure that the three new folders that you have just created appear on the screen and then document your work by printing a screen image of the Windows Explorer window. To print a screen image of the active window, hold down the Alt key and press the Print Screen key at the same time (you will not see anything happen). Open WordPad (see pages WIN11-WIN12 for the steps needed to open WordPad). Type your name and class time into the document and press Enter. Choose Paste from the Edit menu to paste in the Window image. You may need to resize the image to make it fit on the page. Print the document. Make sure that the folders that you created appear on the printout. Write Lab 2.1 on the printout. Close WordPad without saving the document. You just need the printout.

d.      Correction: On page FM 17, you may already be in the Tutorial folder. In which case, you would just double-click the Playground folder.

e.      Addition: On page FM 17 after you have completed step 3, document your work with a printout of the contents of the Playground folder. Use a screen capture and WordPad as before to do this. Write Lab 2.2 on the print out.

f.       At the top of page FM 19, you may want to click the Folders button to make your display appear more like the picture in the text.

g.      Addition: On page FM 20 after you have completed step 5, document your work with a printout of the contents of the Extracted folder. Use a screen capture and WordPad as before to do this. Write Lab 2.3 on the print out.

h.      Addition: After you finish the instructions on page FM20, don’t forget to remove your diskette.

9.      Open the Paint program from the Accessories menu (See page WIN13 for instructions on opening Paint). Draw a simple picture such as a happy face or stick figure. Print the picture. Close Paint without saving the picture unless you have another diskette upon which to save it. Your data disk will most likely not have enough space available for the picture. Write your name and Lab 2.4 on the printout.

10. If you are stopping at this time, Restart the computer (see General Information handout).

Assignment 2 - What you need to turn in on the due date:

1.      Print of Tutorial folder showing files and the three folders you created labeled as Lab 2.1.

2.      Print of the Playground folder showing its files labeled as Lab 2.2.

3.      Print of the Extracted folder showing its contents labeled as Lab 2.3.

4.      Print of the picture you created using Paint labeled as Lab 2.4.
