Instructor: Leland “Wade” Crawford           E-mail: lcrawford@jeffstateonline.com

RC 118-D (856-7854), Office Hours: Posted each semester on my office door.

Texts: Discovering Computers Fundamentals Edition, Shelly, Cashman, and Vermaat. Course Technology. This book is referred to as DC in the planned schedule attached.

New Perspectives Microsoft Office 2003-Brief, Shaffer, Carey, et. al., Course Technology. This book is referred to as NPO in the planned schedule attached.

Course Description: This course is an introduction to computers that reviews computer hardware and software concepts such as equipment, operations, communications, programming and their past, present and future impact on society.  Topics include computer hardware, various types of computer software, communication technologies, program development and using computers to execute software packages and/or to write simple programs. Upon completion, students should be able to describe and use the major components of selected computer software and hardware. Go to http://is.jeffstateonline.com  on the internet for a complete course outline.

Lab Work: There will be a total of 16 assignments during the course that will be required to be completed by each student (See heading Lab Time below).  10% is counted off for each week an assignment is late. The last chance to turn in any lab work for credit will be before the final. No lab work will be accepted after that time. Lab assignments are turned in on exam dates.  If you miss a class, YOU are responsible for finding out what was covered and assigned.  Assignments are due regardless of whether or not you were absent the day the work was assigned or turned in.   No exceptions.

Lab Time: You must have time to spend working on the computer exercises. Unless adjustments have to be made to the planned schedule, the lab days in the schedule are days for which no lecture is planned. Students having problems with lab assignments can see me during that time for help. There may not be space available for all students to work in the lab during those times. If you are not having any problems or can work at home, you may work on something else during that time. Do not rely on lab time days for completion of all lab assignments.

Computer Labs: The open lab is RC 120. The instructional labs used for lab classes are RC 110, 115, and 122. Before using an instructional lab, check the lab hours posted outside the door to make sure a class is not meeting in the lab.

Lab Hours: Open lab hours: Monday-Thursday 8 a.m.-9 p.m., Friday 8 a.m.-4 p.m., and Saturday hours vary each term. Instructional labs are usually open between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. Labs will be closed on all holidays for which the college is closed. Labs close for the semester on the last day of regular classes for the semester.

Software Used: Microsoft® Windows XP, Microsoft® Office 2003, and lab tutorials from http://scsite.com/dcfund .

Materials Needed: Five 3½-inch high-density (HD) diskettes with labels. You may be able to get by with two or three by reusing them.

Exams: A total of three exams (2 regular exams and the final). Exam questions are based primarily on key terms and important concepts from the textbooks and lab assignments.  The final exam time will be given as designated by the “Final Exam Schedule” administered by Jefferson St CC.

Make-up Exams: Make-ups will only be given in special circumstances after written documentation has been provided. It is the students responsibility to contact me within 1 week of returning to class and schedule a mutually agreed upon time for the student to complete a makeup exam. Failure to do so will result in an assigned grade of zero for the missed exam.  However, arrangements may be made for taking exams early if needed.

Class Grade: Lab work                      20%

2 regular exams            25% (50% of total grade)

Final                             30%.

Total possible: 100%

Class Participation: Any student that stops turning in lab work or does not show up for exams will receive a grade of zero on missed lab work and exams. Missed exams will most likely result in a course grade of “F.”

Withdrawal: Enrollment Services must process your signed withdrawal form on or before the last day of class. Students withdrawing after the automatic “W” period ends will be given a "WP" or "WF" based on course work due at that time.
