Instructions for Setting Up Your System for Dial-Up Networking
with the CIS Division Network
SETTING UP YOUR COMPUTER FOR THE CONNECTION: You will need your Windows 95 CD or disks before proceeding. If you are using a computer at work, check with the computer support department there before making any changes to the computer.
- If you do not have Dial-Up Networking already installed, add dial-up networking using the following instructions:
- Open the Control Panel by clicking Start, clicking Settings, and then clicking Control Panel.
- Double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon
- Select the Windows Setup tab
- Double-click Communications
- Check Dial-Up Networking (Note: If Dial-up Networking is already checked, it is already installed.)
- Click OK
- Follow the directions on screen. It may ask for your Windows 95 disk at this time. The software will be installed and your computer may need to reboot.
- After dial-up networking is installed, you must add Microsoft Networking support using the following instructions:
- Open Control Panel as in the above instructions.
- Double-click the Network Icon
- If Client for Microsoft Networks does not appear in the network configuration window,
- Click Add
- Click Client
- Click Add
- Click Microsoft
- Click Client for Microsoft Networks
- Click OK
- If NetBEUI does not appear in the network configuration window,
- Click Add
- Click Protocol
- Click Add
- Click Microsoft
- Click NetBEUI
- Click OK
- If File and printer sharing for Microsoft Networks does not appear in the network configuration window,
- Click Add
- Click Service
- Click Add
- Click Microsoft
- Click File and printer sharing for Microsoft Networks
- Click OK
- Click File and Print Sharing button on the network configuration tab. Check both boxes.
- Select Identification tab at the top of Network window.
- Enter the Computer Name. Each computer on the network must have a unique name.
- Enter CIS as Work group on the Identification tab.
- Click OK and allow the computer to Restart.
- After Restarting the computer, create a dial-up networking connection for connecting to the Division network.
- Double-click the My Computer icon.
- Double-click the Dial-Up Networking icon.
- If the Dial-up Networking Wizard does not start automatically, double-click the Make New Connection icon.
- The Wizard will start and prompt you to Name the Connection. Call it JSCC and click Next.
- Enter the Phone Number: 856-7988 and click Next. Alternate numbers 856-8551 and 856-7916.
- Click Finish to complete the Wizard.
CONNECTING THROUGH DIAL-UP NETWORKING TO THE CIS DIVISION NETWORK:
- Double-click the JSCC connection. To find JSCC connection icon open My Computer, then open Dial-up Networking.
- Enter CISOAD as the Password and click Save password.
- Click Dial Properties. Set the number for an outside line and/or the value for disabling call waiting (such as, *70) if needed. Click OK.
- Click Connect and wait for the modem to dial and connect.
USING THE LAB COMPUTERS ON THE MAIN CAMPUS:
- When you turn the computer on, enter your Student number as the ID. It will show up as ********* on the screen.
- Enter Student as the user name and enter Jeff as the password. Jeff will show up as **** on the screen.
FINDING THE NETWORK FOLDERS AND FILES:
- Once successfully connected, or logged on as Student on a lab computer, click Start, click Find Computer and type in LIB.
- When the LIB computer name appears in the Find window, Press Enter. You should see the shared folders appear.
- Double-click the folders to open them. If the folder is password protected, the Password is to be determined by the instructor.
- Some folders are READ ONLY, from which you may copy files by dragging them to a folder on your computer.
- If you are assigned a personal folder on a computer, it is a READ/WRITE folder with a Password (last four digits of your student number). You must find the computer designated by the instructor with your folder. You may copy files to and from this folder and create sub-folders in it. Each assignment set should be placed in a separate sub-folder in your personal folder.
- When finished, close all open windows. If you dialed in, disconnect the JSCC connection. If you are using a lab computer, click Start, then click Shut Down.
Additional instructions to Log on to NT Domain.
Use the dial-up instructions to set up your computer to connect to the JSCC network.
To set up to Log on the CIS domain:
- Right-Click on Network Neighborhood and Select Properties.
- Select Client for Microsoft Network in the installed components list.
- Select the Properties Button which should be enabled.
- Check Log on to NT Domain.
- Enter CIS as the Windows NT Domain .
Reboot and connect to JSCC network.
You should get a Login screen after the connection is made.
Use your assigned User Name and Password to Log On.
You know you are connected when you can Find Computers or Browse the Network Neighborhood.
