This history course is a web-supported course. I have put all the pertinent history information on web-ct divided into units. You can print the notes and bring them to class for discussion.
The above dates are tentative and subject to change. Each test will consist of Matching, Identify, and Short Answer questions. Because this is the Summer term, we will only have a mid-term and a final, thus students are allowed no make up exams. Students will take exams in Blue Books: you can find these in the bookstore. Each test will be worth 200pts. each for a total of 400pts.
You must have the supplemental reader, Sources of the American Past Vol. II 2nd edition; this is the text you need in course to go along with your on-line notes. The reading assignments are listed on the syllabus. You are responsible for having them read by the day assigned. You are not responsible for reading anything other than what is on this syllabus or what I assign in class. You will have four unit homework assignments worth 25 points each for a total of 100pts. The homework questions are at the end of each unit in the book. The answers are due on the dates listed above.
Students will do a group research assignment on one of American history's greatest court cases worth 50pts. Below you will find five cases and sources from which to do research. I will assign the project on June 10th; Outlines are due on June 21st, with the finished project due July 1st. Students will also read, Anthem by Ayn Rand when we begin our Unit on World War I (around July 8th ), then write an essay, worth 50 pts., after we discuss the work in class. Papers are due on or near July 29th. This book can be found in our book store or in any bookstore around town. Together, these assignments total 100pts.
I only have three pet peeves. Please turn off your beepers and cell phones before coming to class. Also, while I do not take attendance, I do take notice if you are tardy to my class. If you are habitually late to class, I reserve the right to call you a loser when walk into class. So get to class on time. If you know you're going to be late, have the courtesy to call and let me know. If you miss class, it is your responsibility to get any assignment from me or to me.
One last thing, this history class will deal with many controversial issues such as, but not limited to, our government's past treatment of Indians, religion, cloning and the holocaust. Some of you may find discussing these issues offensive and uncomfortable, but we must cover them or else our understanding of American history will be incomplete. Therefore, if you have any problem with my language, subject matter or reading assignments, please see me in private so we can discuss this as adults. Remember, this is college not high school.
Attendance
Students are expected to attend all classes for which they are registered. Students who are unable to attend class regularly, regardless of the reason or circumstance, should withdraw from that class before poor attendance interferes with the student’s ability to achieve the objectives required in the course. Withdrawal from class can affect eligibility for federal financial aid.
Statement on Discrimination/Harassment
The College and the Alabama State Board of Education are committed to providing both employment and educational environments free of harassment or discrimination related to an individual’s race, color, gender, religion, national origin, age, or disability. Such harassment is a violation of State Board of Education policy. Any practice or behavior that constitutes harassment or discrimination will not be tolerated.
Americans with Disabilities
The Rehabilitation Act of 1973 (Section 504) and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 state that qualified students with disabilities who meet the essential functions and academic requirements are entitled to reasonable accommodations. It is the student’s responsibility to provide appropriate disability documentation to the college.
